Ikebana Cabinet ( Flower Arrangement Cabinet)- Photography Kat Tramoy
This cabinet piece was my last assessment piece for my Cabinet, Furniture making apprenticeship. It was completed during 2014.
It was awarded the 'Andrew Kossenas' Apprentice of the Year Award'
I wanted to create a piece that was defiantly away from the normal idea of what a cabinet should look like. This piece was the starting point that lead me towards having a keen interest in Japanese design. I mostly taught my self when I made this piece. There were a lot of firsts in this piece ie decorative veneering, building complex angled structures, router based inlay and etc.
Some of the design features:
- 'V' orientation book matched veneers
- Router based inlay to depict a ink sketch of Japanese Cherry Blossoms.
- Locking magnets are installed in the doors to create an origami look when either closed or open.
- x4 slanted trapezium shaped pull out decorative display boxes.
-Compound angled mitre edgings on doors.
Timbers:
Solid- Redgum, Paduke, Wenge, Tasmanian Oak, Hard Rock Maple
Commercial veneers: Fiddle Back Hard Rock Maple, Quarter Sawn Wenge
