After three decades working as a production chemist in the international oil and gas industry — from the searing deserts of the Middle East and North Africa to the offshore platforms of the North Sea and Brazil — I made the decision to trade hard hats and helicopter flights for something far more personal: the craft of working with timber.
Woodworking has always been part of my life. What began as a passion outside of a demanding scientific career has now become my full-time focus.
Today, from my Brisbane workshop, I create custom furniture, homewares, and wooden art under the Wood Chemistry name. Each piece is individually designed and carefully crafted, whether it’s a bespoke table, cabinet, or chest of drawers, or smaller pieces such as keepsake boxes, chopping boards, and wall art.
My background in science continues to shape how I work. Precision, patience, and attention to detail are at the core of every project. I approach timber with the same discipline that defined my scientific career — measured, methodical, and deeply respectful of the material itself.
I am particularly drawn to the character of Australian timbers. Their grain, colour, and natural variation ensure that no two pieces are ever the same. Every project becomes a collaboration between design, craftsmanship, and the unique story held within the wood.
Wood Chemistry represents the intersection of two lifelong pursuits — where science meets craft, and where hard work meets passion.
